Our Mission

Our naturalist program helps promote a sense of connection with native wildlife surrounding UC Merced. Merced is home to a biodiversity hotspot with lots of endemic and threatened species and habitat. PAL Naturalist utilizes iNaturalist to engage students in citizen science and hone their identification skills of flora and fauna. Students then can utilize these skills on our birdwatching and bioblitz excursions to places like the vernal pools, on-campus and the Merced Wildlife Refuge. These skills allow students to participate in data collection with real-world applications, strengthening their skills as ecologists and preparing them for data-driven biology. Our naturalist program also aims to foster an appreciation and respect for our environment through our rewilding and beautification of Half Dome project.

Vernal Pools Camera Trap Research

Our Vernal Pools Experimental Research Area (ERA) Camera Trap Project is made to monitor wildlife activity in Merced’s endangered vernal pool grassland ecosystem. Using high-resolution AltLoop Pro 4K Trail Cameras with infrared night vision and motion-activated sensors, we document animal behavior, habitat use, and biodiversity in this sensitive conservation area. By placing these cameras throughout approved Merced County co. Management units, we collect data on local wildlife populations, contributing to ecological research and conservation efforts.

The Camera Trap Project is UC Merced’s first-ever student-led research initiative within the vernal pool grassland ecosystem. Through the combination of field research and technology, the project provides hands-on experience in ecological science while generating valuable data that supports conservation, land management, and species protection efforts. It’s an opportunity for students to contribute to real-world research and make a lasting environmental impact.

Half Dome Rewilding Project

Currently part of our Naturalist Programs, the Half Dome Rewilding Project focuses on restoring native plants and     creating habitats for local wildlife behind Half Dome. As it grows toward becoming its own stand-alone program, students have the unique chance to get involved early—shaping its future, contributing ideas, and gaining hands-on experience in ecological restoration and sustainable landscaping.

Naturalist Workshops

The Naturalist Workshops provide students with hands-on opportunities to explore ecology, conservation, and the natural sciences through engaging, skill-based activities. Workshop topics include Entomology, Camera Trap Footage Processing, and Animal Anatomy & Zooarchaeology, each offering unique ways to study biodiversity and the environment.

Students gain practical experience by ethically preserving insects, analyzing real wildlife footage from trail cameras, and examining animal bones and biological models. These activities deepen understanding of evolution, adaptation, and the vital role of wildlife in ecosystems while fostering scientific curiosity and critical thinking.
