Our Mission

Our Paleo Program offers students a unique, hands-on introduction to paleontology through fossil excavation, identification, and research. By simulating real-world fieldwork, students gain skills in documentation, data collection, and geological analysis. Through collaborations with institutions like the Madera Fossil Discovery Center, participants engage in museum-quality learning, lab work, and professional workshops. This program merges multiple scientific disciplines to provide a comprehensive understanding of Earth's history. Students not only get to explore the past but also contribute to local paleontological studies, preparing them for careers in the natural sciences.

Mock Digs

The Simulation Mock Dig gives students the opportunity to practice fossil excavation techniques in a supportive, hands-on learning environment before working with real specimens at the Madera Fossil Discovery Center. Using prepared dig buckets, participants simulate professional paleontological fieldwork by uncovering, documenting, and identifying fossils.

These exercises not only build practical skills but also create a collaborative learning community. Experienced students lead the mock digs, sharing their knowledge and guiding new participants, which fosters mentorship, teamwork, and confidence in the field. This preparation ensures students are ready to transition smoothly into authentic excavation and research experiences.

Madera Fossil Discovery Center

Through our partnership with the Madera Fossil Discovery Center, students gain immersive, hands-on experience in fossil excavation and research while working alongside professional paleontologists. Using authentic field jackets from UC Berkeley, participants carefully uncover, prepare, and analyze fossils, contributing to both active scientific studies and the preservation of California’s paleontological heritage.

In addition to fieldwork, students assist with cleaning, documenting, and curating specimens for public exhibits at the Discovery Center, gaining valuable experience in museum practices and science communication. Back on campus, they bring their expertise to peers through simulation mock digs, offering guided training that prepares students for real excavation and lab work in Madera.

This partnership bridges classroom learning with professional field experience, giving students the chance to build technical skills, practice collaboration, and share paleontology with the broader community through outreach and education.
